Ansøg senest 6. okt. 2026
Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Biological and Chemical Engineering programme. The position is available from 01 December 2026 or later. You can submit your application via the link under 'how to apply'.
Title
Task-specific ionic liquids for advanced applications
Research area and project description
Many biologically active molecules are chiral, and their enantiomers can vary in biological activity, metabolism, and physicochemical properties. Thus, controlling enantiomeric composition accurately is crucial in pharmaceutical and analytical chemistry. Chiral ionic liquids (CILs) are especially interesting because their structures can be systematically altered while maintaining a defined chiral environment.
This Ph.D. project will explore how CILs interact with chiral active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), focusing on the molecular features that influence enantiomeric recognition and separation.
It involves designing and synthesizing suitable CILs based on chosen combinations of chiral cations and anions. The resulting materials will be characterized for their chemical structure, thermal behavior, and relevant physicochemical properties. Their ability to distinguish API enantiomers will then be tested experimentally.
Promising systems will undergo further study for API separation and isolation, including crystallization. Structural analysis and computational methods may be used to examine the molecular interactions that drive chiral recognition and to investigate new systems.
The overall objective is to establish a clearer understanding of how the molecular structure of CILs influences enantiomeric recognition.
You will join an interdisciplinary group of excellent and experienced researchers at the Faculty of Technical Sciences at Aarhus University. The project will contribute new knowledge on chiral ionic liquid systems and their potential relevance in pharmaceutical chemistry.
